Ricky Bobby, the likable NASCAR driver played by Will Ferrell in the movie Talladega Nights, preferred praying to the tiny baby Jesus versus the grown-up bearded Jesus. That’s not all bad. Jesus in a manger was more relatable and accessible to him, much like the shepherds must have felt when they arrived at the stable where God chose to reveal Himself to the world as a baby.

It was also very different for the shepherds. An angel appeared to them in a field where they were living, keeping watch over their flocks at night, and said,

Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David, a Savior has been born to you. He is the Messiah, the Lord. (Luke 2:10-11)

The idea of the baby Jesus at Christmas was safe and sentimental for Ricky Bobby. But the shepherds came to worship Jesus.

It wasn't until the end of the summer following my freshman year of college that I finally came to worship Jesus. Until then, I only appreciated the story. I kept Jesus at a safe distance so He wouldn’t interfere with my life. But one day, His story became the centerpiece of my story. The Savior of the world became the Savior of me, and that changed everything!

May God’s grace and peace fill your heart and mind as you celebrate the good news that is the headline of this season.

What does Christmas mean to you? The Prophet Isaiah answers that question when he proclaims:

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given. And the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. (Isaiah 9:6-7)

In this 35-minute message, Dr. Bruce Webb explains that Jesus was both Wonderful AND the Wonderful Counselor.

Even when faced with a hard decision, one where he would be justified in the eyes of others to not hold back and publicly shame a woman who had presumably cheated on him, Joseph was looking for a way to be gracious. He was like a tree planted by water. As the adoptive father of Jesus, he knew what it meant to accept responsibility and lead courageously.

In this 35-minute message, Tierce provides insight into the man God used as an earthly father figure for Jesus.
